A Thought for Today

Be gentle with those you love, especially children. Gentleness is in short supply. Contribute to it.

FROM the¨BOOKS

BAJA

Scarlet is the space
that flushes out
the folded cloud lines
in the western sky
between the silent surface
           of the sea.

In only moments
the space will narrow,
grow quite red,
then quiet pink-and go.

And still the old man
does not come
         to lead the cattle home.

Whatever mystery has made him late,
the animals are restless now.
Should I start down the road,
                     they'd follow -
Gladly I would lead them home
but by which road?

That seems to be the center,
the heart and edge
           of every quandary.
Which road? When to take it?
How to know for sure.

I have found -
when doubting most -
that up ahead is always up ahead
and however many turns
the right or left road makes
it always leads to right or left.

I do not imagine
what I've said or say
will offer much encouragement
to the would-be traveler
but the information, once distilled,
                 should say
the only way to get there is to go.

Rod's random thoughts Being human beings demands that we care about each other.

All of us love and hate but few of us understand.

Don't expect too much from love and the rewards will be immeasurable.

PEOPLE ON THEIR BIRTHDAYS

People on their birthdays will take a drink or two
and tell you how they won the prize in Nineteen Forty-Two
some other Sunday before the swing came down
and papa smashed the car up on his way in from the town.

People on their birthdays all live in yesterday
before the kids grew up and went their own ambitious way
wasn't it something that long ago July
that's about the time birthday people start to cry.

Happy Birthday, drink a toast to me
I'm all of ten goin' on a hundred twenty-three
people on their birthdays are fond of lookin' back
to half remembered yesterdays when things were not so black
some other summer when playin' ball was fun
and life's rewards were chocolate bars and two-bit bubble gum.

Happy Birthday, drink a toast to me
I'm all of ten goin' on a hundred twenty-three
people on their birthdays should have a chocolate cake
and be prepared tomorrow for a memory bellyache
looks like a rain storm beyond the cloudy sky
birthdays come so often, I've forgotten how to cry.
