A Thought for Today
If all I've done so far is all I can do, I'm not impressed.

Birthdays are birthdays. They come around each year. They never vary much unless you're vain enough to carry a mirror in your purse or pocket. So at this ripe old age instead of concentrating on the year just added, I've decided to mention an anniversary of much more recent vintage.
Today A Safe Place To Land starts its third year on the net. To those who have been with us from the beginning, a very low bow and the highest degree of thanks. A special welcome to the readers who've joined us over the years and continue to do so every day. This safe place to land exists for you.
Too many contribute to this site to single out, but a few must be mentioned; Wade Alexander, Jay Hagan, Melinda Smith and especially our webmaster Ken Blackie.
It was Ken who dragged me kicking and screaming onto the net and his hard work and vision from the other side of The Atlantic keep us turning every day.
My love to all of you, especially Megan, Nicola and Priscilla who let me share their dad and husband every day.
Party hearty and sleep warm, though not necessarily with the designated driver.

I started working on a poem for Jay last year and printed the results as a work in progress. It was just that. I’m printing the original again this year and a version I revised today. It’s better but it still isn’t
there, that means I have to hang around at least another year to work on it some more.

I am in awe of having come this far without too big a turning.

Other names will always sound larger than your own. Learn humility early.

Let none who come to know you say, you didn't try.

WATERFALLS AND RAINBOWS
-a work in process for Jay Hagan |
|
The most surprising rainbows
always seem to arch across waterfalls.
Sometimes when you're lucky
the edges of the colors blur
so that you have twice as many hues as anticipated.
Double rainbows may be rare
but if you hunt them down you'll find them,
they are there.
I promise you they're there.
The legendary pot of gold at the end
of every multi colored arch?
I found mine long ago
by discovering what I wanted to do
and learning how to do it.
Still I go on chasing waterfalls and hunting rainbows.
As for learning,
that's a process that's always just beginning.

VERSION TWO / Revised 4/28/2001
The most surprising rainbows
always seem to arch across waterfalls.
Sometimes when you're lucky
the edges of the colors blur
so that you have twice as many hues
as you anticipated.
Double rainbows? Rare.
no use to try and hunt them down
they’ll find you when you least expect
them. I promise you they are there.
.
The legendary pot of gold where
every multi colored archway ends?
I discovered my own long ago
by discovering what it was I wanted
to do, then doing it until I learned to do it.
That hasn’t stopped my rambling
after rainbows,
my waterfall wanderings.
All of it another part
Of learning on the job.
-First draft, 4/28/2000,
revised 4/28/2001. Still ‘in the works.’ |
