A Thought for Today

Because pride seldom lets us beg forgiveness, we must content ourselves with dying a little each time a door is closed.

This One Does It For Me!

Hi Ken,

I've always loved Rod's work when he wrote so touchingly about his animals.

I'm familiar with Sloopy and Mr. Kelly but was wondering if he's ever written about any of his other animals?

Karen

On many occasions, Karen. Come to think of it a really nice idea for a book would be a collection of animal poems - must suggest that to Rod one day.

Here are a couple of poems about some of Rod's cats.

Mornings With Bingo

May 5

Bingo blinks
and pats my face.
Breakfast time.
I stay still, barely breathe
aware that my first twitch
              will start the morning.
This game is played out every day.

Nikki, fat and lazy,
sets his brother to it.
I arise, still sleeping
and struggle through a feline maze,
like time, intent on tripping me.
I put the coffee on, go down the hall,
look in on Edward, find him,
already up and hiding
in the second section of the Times.
I retrieve what he’s already read
and balancing coffee cup and papers
settle on the couch before the fire
                 to begin the day.

Bingo helps me with the crossword
and then distracted by a bug
he executes a clean half-gainer to the floor
                               to paw his prey.

Rod's random thoughts Every generation gap should have some kind of bridge - even if it's only made of love.

The leanest naked body is the work of God and therefore a love object.

Love is the answer. Now then, what was the question?

NIKKI

June 16

The gulf between the pillows is his turf
until his nightly scratch
               has been completed.
He finds the bottom of the bed at sunrise
and winding tight as any fist
                              or baseball
stakes it as his own.

Habits won’t be broken easily
not mine or yours or his
and so the patience we reserve
                     for one another
must include each eccentricity
he demands or offers.
He moves in semicircles
observing how you act with me
or how we interact without him.
He is curious. He is cautious
                   ingesting everything
(you and me in places
only he and I had shared before).

It is not that he has squatter’s rights,
he is an equal partner
deserving of respect,
and you will learn as you learn him
how strong his contribution is.
