A Thought for Today

A family with a yard needs a dog. A dog with a family needs a yard.

Sherilyn Bottoms of Atlanta is one of our regular correspondents and is owned by a Bearded Collie named Hootie.

She and Hootie were kind enough to pass the following along for our attention.

Hi Ken,

Greetings from "Grits Land", aka, Atlanta.

Ken, this doggie biscuit recipe was sent by a friend with whom Hootie! and I do our pet therapy work. If she recommends, I'm on board. Perhaps a recipe you can add to your book/box/ or share with the folks out there?

DOGGIE BISCUIT RECIPE

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup wheat flour
1/2 cup dry milk
1/2 cup wheat germ
1/2 teaspoon salt
6 Tablespoons shortening
2 eggs
1 teaspoon brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup water

Mix all ingredients thoroughly. You may have to add a little more all-purpose flour to make the dough a bit firmer. Roll dough and cut into desired shapes. Bake at 350F for 10 to 15 minutes.

AND, while I know nothing about "special days" in S. Africa, well one of MY favorite "special days" is Take Your Dog To Work Day. It's June 22nd in the US. Think it's worth passing along!

Of course, not everyone can do that, but Hootie! often goes to work w/me. He's greeted at Hennessy Lexus (I work for the owner), with "Hi, Hootie", as you'd hear "Hi, Ken". After all, a lot of our Lexus customers have dogs, and many times the pups keep the owners company in our lounge while cars are being serviced!

Hootie! keeps his Welcoming Doggie Bowl at the office for visiting canines' water bowl use. (Sure, I love it ... but you'd understand how much customers like it!) He's actually gotten 2 thank you notes mailed to him. That Hootie! is a hoot!

Sherilyn & Hootie

Tyra (the four-footed love of my life) and I have discussed the recipe at great length, Sherilyn, and we can't wait to give it a crack just as soon as our house move is over. Feedback from anyone who tries it sooner would be much appreciated.

I LOVE the idea of taking your dog to work on Friday and hope many of our readers will follow your example. My wife Priscilla works for a company which has a veterinarian resident on the premises so Tyra has been to work on a number of occasions to get her shots. Although she charmed everyone in sight she didn't behave all that well so I don't think she'll be going along come this Friday.

Thanks for some interesting info, Sherilyn, and big hugs to Hootie. Below I've posted my favorite "doggie" song just for him.

Keep those letters coming! If you have a favorite McKuen song or poem you'd like to share, drop me a line at ken@mckuen.com and I'll make sure it gets a posting right here one Wednesday.

South Africans are well known for their passionate interest in sport and when two of our national teams lose matches on consecutive days, as happened this past weekend, we're deeply depressed.

Come Monday we desperately needed some cheering up and this was provided by local boy Retief Goosen as he captured the US Open Golf Championship in dramatic style. The whole country has been buoyed by his achievement on what is undoubtedly the toughest circuit in the world.

I hope my friend and fellow golf nut, Bob Ryan, was watching and that he gave us boys down south a thought. Bob, a well known golf administrator in the Los Angeles area and a faithful reader of ASPTL, would appreciate just what it takes to win on the US Tour and, in particular, the National Championship of that country.

Well done, Retief. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy!

They call them “Dog Days” because no self-respecting cat would go out on a day like this.

My dog likes oranges, but he’ll eat apples too. Don’t bother me with your conventions and I’ll not trouble you with mine.

MR. KELLY / KELLY AND ME

Hey Mister Kelly, ain’t it a thrill
just to go running down some green hill
rolling on the green grass, walking by the sea
always together, Kelly and me.

Running on the green grass
walkin’ by the sea
caught in the sunshine, Kelly and me.

Hey Mister Kelly, when we grow old
who'll give us comfort, care from the cold
what does it matter, long as we’re free
and always together, Kelly and me.
