SOME SILENT SPRING
Some silent spring
when everything is so quiet
only the piper down the field
is making sounds
we’ll take the season at its word.
I'll bring you willows
from the woods edge
we’ll sit quietly
waiting for the deer
to come into the clearing
for water.- from
"Celebrations of the Heart", 1975
STARGAZING
I'm floating
spread-eagled
held down by stars.
I want to believe you
because I want you
and so I believe you
I do.
But what a wonder
you
close on me and caring
saying that you care.
Stay
I'm coming over there.
Better
best.
I am floating
spread-eagled
lifted up by stars.

Midnights,” 1981
POPCORN
Making popcorn
for the seagulls on the porch
you look up from the stove
just long enough to look away.
Some new obscurity behind your eyes
I am not as yet at liberty to know
stays lurking there
between the popcorn and the flame.
