Rod's random thoughts Each of us should be alone at times, if only to confront ourselves.

Solitude is a gift that most of us are too dumb to appreciate.

What matters is the quality of solitude we keep while waiting to be found out.

Some silent spring
when everything is so quiet
only the piper down the field
is making sounds
we’ll take the season at its word.
I'll bring you willows
from the woods edge
we’ll sit quietly
waiting for the deer
to come into the clearing
for water.

- from "Celebrations of the Heart", 1975

I'm floating
held down by stars.
I want to believe you
because I want you

and so I believe you
I do.

But what a wonder
close on me and caring
saying that you care.
I'm coming over there.

I am floating
lifted up by stars.

-from “Too Many Midnights,” 1981

Making popcorn
for the seagulls on the porch
you look up from the stove
just long enough to look away.

Some new obscurity behind your eyes
I am not as yet at liberty to know
stays lurking there
between the popcorn and the flame.
