A Thought for Today

Let's get real. Don't expect too much from holiday celebrations and you'll never be disappointed. By the same token if your mood is somewhat grim don't let it ruin someone else's Christmas. Be a grouch on your own time.

CARNEGIE HALL TICKETS

Here’s a letter from Jerry Lonn that explains ticket prices to the “30th Anniversary of the 40th Birthday Concert” event April 30th 2003 at Carnegie Hall. And below you’ll find information on how and where to order tickets.

An all inclusive Package Tour is being offered by Learning on Location and Ken will be adding a link to their web site on both the Flight Plan & The Concert Page of ASPTL as soon as they have posted the information.

Dear Rod:

Ticket prices for the Carnegie Hall Concert are as follows:

Parquet: $80 (this is the orchestra on main floor)

1st Tier Boxes: $125 – includes admission to the after-concert VIP reception

2nd Tier Boxes: $60, $45 ($45 tickets are on the sides)

Dress Circle: $45

Balcony: $35, $24

Tickets may be ordered in advance from your website, and will go on sale at Carnegie Hall (their box office, website, and by phone) starting February 28.

ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT BECAUSE OF CARNEGIE HALL’S CONTRACT, THE ONLY WEBSITE THAT CAN TAKE CHARGE ORDERS IS CARNEGIE’S, THUS ORDERS VIA ROD’S WEBSITE MUST BE PAID FOR BY CHECK. I DON’T KNOW HOW YOU WILL HANDLE THE MECHANICS OF THIS, BUT KNOWING CARNEGIE HALL, THEY’LL CHECK YOUR WEBSITE TO MAKE SURE WE ARE NOT VIOLATING THIS CONDITION.

Regards, Jerry.

Dear Jerry: Thanks on behalf of all the fans and friends who have been requesting ticket info.

Here’s the way we will handle the ticket situation. Since we cannot accept credit cards, tickets may be ordered by sending a request and check for the full amount to:

Rod McKuen Tickets
Box G
Beverly Hills, CA 90213

Once the check has cleared the buyer will receive a letter of confirmation by return mail (E or snail). We will start sending the tickets by registered mail on or about February 1st, 2003.

Since Carnegie Hall will not begin selling their tickets until February 28th those who order through this website or as part of the Learning on Location package tour during the next two months will obviously get first crack at preferred seating.

That’s it in a nutshell.

Here’s a little more news on the two packages The Learning Co. will offer.

Package 1: 5 days & 4 Nights.
Package 2: 4 days & 3 Nights

Both packages include airfare, hotel accommodations, Parquet / orchestra seating, tours & tickets to Broadway shows plus an exclusive Reading & Rap session and presentation I’ll be giving only for tour members.

Tomorrow I’ll be printing a letter from Jack Brenton who is coordinating the tour for us. His letter contains more complete information (including the price of the packages). I feel certain that before the week is out Learning on Location will be up and running for orders. Cheers, Rod

EMENEM & A PROPOSED BIOGRAPHY

Hi Rod, Recognizable snippets of your poetry are present on the Mystic Moods "Touch" album (Also known as "Highway
One"). What was your connection, if any, with that album? It seems to be an echo of "The Sea." What do you think of that Mystic Moods album?

I'm a librarian, writer, and publisher, among many other things. I can't believe there's no book-length biography of you. I would like to write an "authorized" biography of you. Would that be possible? Incidentally I was born in England but live in Colorado now. Best wishes, Ed Sadowski.

Dear Ed, Thanks for the questions.

What do I think of The Mystic Moods attempted rip-off of "The Sea" and other San Sebastian Strings albums? Perhaps the best retort to that Eminem series of albums can be found on a track Anita and I did for our "Autumn" album. In any argument satire always trumps anger. If you want to check it out the title is a (not so subtle) "The Mystic Moog." My only connection to Highway One is that during my Pacific coastline excursions I often find myself on it. . . still too many potholes and potential rock slides along the California portion.

So far I've resisted any attempts at co-operating on a biography but based on the mail I'm getting perhaps the time for such a venture might be at hand. It's something I'll have to think about. Tell me more.

Colorado is indeed one of God's more important gardens and based on my many trips to, stays in and enjoyment of Great Britain I feel more than qualified for duel citizenship. Birthed in one and living in the other you do indeed embrace the best of all possible worlds. The people of The British Isles and The Colonies ain't half-bad either. All the Best, Rod

TIME OF DESIRE

Mr. McKuen, First, let me say that, having graduated high school in 1967, I grew up with your poetry and with your music, both on your albums as well as on the albums of Glen Yarbrough. Your thoughts and your music played a very large part in the emergence of who I am today, and to the delight of many others for whom I performed your music Thank you!

In 1969 while working in a small music store in Palos Verdes, California, a customer was kind enough to give me a record album of Time Of Desire (R407), by High Fidelity Recording, Inc. Recently while recording the album to mp3 format for storage on my computer (not to worry; as a Microsoft employee, I’m aware of security issues, do not trade mp3s, and will not be trading yours), I found there was no album copyright date. Can you tell me when the album was made/copyrighted?

Again, thank you for your wonderful contributions. Sincerely, Ronald K. McHaney

Dear Ronald: Thanks for the inquiry regarding my old friend "Time of Desire." My memory on long ago dates can get a little fuzzy but checking out Wade Alexander's "McKuen Discography" published in the May 5, 1973 issue of Billboard magazine "Time of Desire" was recorded in the spring of 1958 and released in November of the same year. In April of 1959 HiFi released my second spoken word album "Beatsville" (recently reissued on compact disc complete with a set of fonts by P22 Records, a division of The P22 Type Foundry in Buffalo New York). Both were recorded in Los Angeles by the noted sound master Richard Vaughn.

As with many of my albums I bought back the original masters and they are now owned by The Stanyan Music Group.

In checking the files I turned up the following copyright notices:
Time of Desire © 1958 by Rod McKuen; Copyright renewed 1972 & 1998 by Rod McKuen & Stanyan Music Group.

Beatsville © 1959 by Rod McKuen; Copyright renewed 1972 & 1998 by Rod McKuen & Stanyan Music Group.

Thanks for the kind thoughts on my words & music. Now as an employee of Microsoft if I could just get you to tell me why I can't seem to install Office & Word 2001 on my Mac Powerbook G4 (they work fine on my iMac) my day would be complete. Kindest Regards, Rod

DWARF TOSSING?

Dear Mr. McKuen, My mother is a huge fan of yours and insists that she saw you on Mike Douglas once and you said something about changing the lyrics to I'll Follow the Sun to I'll Follow the Son. Please comment. For Fran the Fan, Her Son Mark

Dear Mark: You obviously mean "I'll Catch the Sun" and I do remember singing it on The Mike Douglas Show but I have no recollection of a conversation with Mike about changing the lyric. The words to I'll Catch the Sun came to me very quickly and were inspired by a film score I was working on in 1968. "Joanna" was the name of the film and it's hard for me to imagine altering the lyric since to this day it continues to be one of my most requested songs. Still anything is possible.

On the other hand if you do mean "I'll Follow the Sun", the late George Harrison wrote it and it's possible George made the remark about his lyric. Unless someone can dig up a tape of that show we will probably never know the answer to your mom's question.

Sorry I can't be of more help but please give your mother my kindest regards. Warmly, Rod

PERMISSION

Hello, Rod: I read with much interest a few letters in your Flight Plan column that deal with clinical depression. Your thoughts on this topic would be very helpful to me in the biography I'm writing about actor Albert Salmi, who suffered with severe depression in his final years and, tragically, did end up taking his own life in 1990. His first wife, actress Peggy Ann Garner, also fell into the abyss of despair toward the end of her life.

May I have your permission to quote in both of their biographies a few passages from your answers to Nancy and Coral in your October 24, 2000, Flight Plan? Sandra Grabman

Dear Sandra, By all means feel free to quote me as long as you attribute the quotation. I'm for anything that helps shed light on clinical depression and I'm a fan of both Mr. Salmi and Miss Garner's work.

Good luck with your books. I read the 'recognition' excerpt you posted on your Website from your work on Albert Salmi and found it refreshing. I've bookmarked your site and hope to return to it when I'm a little less stressed out and busy. Kindest Regards, Rod

Sleep warm & I’ll be back with more mail and information on the package tour tomorrow.

TWO POEMS FROM
CHRISTMAS PAST

The 1972 Christmas Card

This year
Let us buy each other nothing.
Give me your strongest smile
and in return
I’ll let you have my hand.
These are presents quite enough
for two who love each other
      and each others God.

-from the 1972 Rod McKuen Calendar & Date Book, 1971

Winter Can Be Long

With so little love or kindness
shouted out or carried to us
winter can be long.

I know you have some troubles
but they belong to me now, too,
we can skate the ice together.
