RIVERTON CONCERT FEEDBACK

The Riverton bash is just around the corner and once again we hope to feature feedback from concert goers right here on ASPTL.

If you are going to be one of the lucky attendees and think you'll be able to submit a report-back shortly after the concert, please drop me a line letting me know that you'll be able to help out. The e-mail address is, as usual, ken@mckuen.com .

I have no idea of the availability of Internet access from Riverton but I'm pretty sure some of our more resourceful readers will find a way to file their report. Look forward to hearing from you.

THIS ONE DOES IT FOR ME!

Simran has a couple of goodies for us today.

Ken,

Can you guys put in something from "With Love...". (pretty please with banana chips on top?) That was my first and still a favorite and poems from that book very rarely make it onto the FP.

Or maybe you can put it into "This One Does It For Me"? How about "The Distance to Monterey"? Or "Old Houses"? I would like everyone to learn to run with gypsies. Do you still taste like almonds? ;)

Simran

You've got both, Simran, and thanks for your contribution.

Here's the first:

The Distance to Monterey

Silence is a better means
for telegraphing thought
than any Morse code yet made.
I wonder if you know
how many conversations
we have had so far
with no words passed ?
I often think our silence
has energy to get us
all the way to Monterey and back.

-from "With Love", 1970

Please drop me a line at ken@mckuen.com if you have a favorite McKuen song or poem you'd like to share and I'll make sure your submission is published right here one Wednesday.

Rod's random thoughts What’s right with our country is those who go on righting wrongs.

Kindness to your country and yourself comes easily and is done with ease. To hurt something you love is difficult and takes no imagination.

But in the end, no few men change the country – it still belongs to us.

OLD HOUSES

I love old houses
          for their smells,
their must and dust and mildew
and for what they've been
to people I will never know.

The character
of caulked up cracks
means more to me
than plastered walls and pretty paper,
walls that play the neighbors' music
when the radio I love
           has gone to sleep.

The faces of the old
are like old houses
every line's a highway
          from the past.

And so I love old houses
and the people who sit rocking
on their sagging porches.
