A Thought for Today

Each friend we lose in this world spurs our desire to enter the world that lies ahead.

WRITING A POEM

When someone asks me how long it took to write a particular poem I ask what year it was published, and even if I used up only hours to commit the words to paper I add the life I've lived to the point of publication, and give that as my answer.

My poems of ten years ago are different from the ones I write today. The work I do tomorrow will be miles apart from that done yesterday. My seasons in the sun ahead are not as many as they could be. Nonetheless they will be lived out fully - as full as I know how to make them. For me no day is complete unless I've written a few words about it. I trust my notebook more and my memory less each hour. -Tres Vidas, Mexico, 1974

3/5/01 - adapted from the introduction to "Seasons In The Sun", 1974

I don’t know about you but I miss Dan Rather already. I’ll see you over the weekend – if not at the Luckman then back here with a few words. Sleep warm.

Rod's random thoughts A poet ought to wear his heart on one sleeve and politics on the other. It is the perfect balance to be of use to everyman.

Deceiving those we love isn't worth it, the hangover lasts too long.

Don't leave it to the historians to tell us if we are closer to the twilight than the dawn. That's the poet and philosophers job.

BY THE NUMBERS

You went away
in such great numbers.

A covey of you
at the corner.
A band of you
beyond the block.
A herd of you
unhearing as I cried aloud,
come back, come back.

You went away so often
and in such great numbers
that I'd not be surprised
to meet a regiment of you
clicking down the sidewalk
clacking up the street
returning, coming back.
