I'D LIKE TO TRY 
(For Georgine Rose)

 I'd put roots down if I could 
deeper than the plow could peel, 
down into the earth so far 
that they could not be flushed 
by floods or fed by any 
but the hardest, longest rain. 

To be sure that I had once belonged 
I'd grow tentacles so long 
that giants would look longingly 
upon my roots and me 
and my longevity. 

I may not get the chance again 
to help somebody build their life 
but if I do I'd like to try 
to help make their foundation 
and my own pilings too 
one and the same and strong.
