A Thought for Today

With understanding comes both recognition and resignation.

This One Does It For Me!

Dear Sir,

Back in the 70's I found a poem book with various poems by Rod McKuen but have been stationed in the army all over the world since and I have misplaced or lost the book.

My favourite in the book was Some Trust in Chariots with great big yellow wheels and I cannot seem to be able to find the words or a copy of the poem. What is the possibility to get a copy of the words? It was a poem that when recited made me believe that there are always better things in life than being worried.

I would be most grateful if I could have a copy of the words.

I look forward to your reply.

Yours aye

Sidney Goodall

Thanks for your letter, Sidney, and welcome to A Safe Place to Land.

You are quite correct, "Some Trust in Chariots" did appear in a number of Rod's books, even though it's a song, not a poem. He often included song lyrics at the end of books which led people to believe they were poems.

The good news, in case you missed it, is that the version of "Chariots" which I've chosen for today will soon be available on Compact Disc. This is one of many tracks which Rod has remastered for the upcoming release of "Live in London" and I can't wait to get my hands on it.

The vinyl double album is one I purchased directly from Stanyan when it was first released back in 1970 and it remains one of my favorites. Not only is the content excellent but the quality of the pressing far superior to our local albums at the time. I remember saving for months for the album and I think the import duty amounted to more than the cost of the album!

Thanks for writing, Sidney, and you'll find the lyrics at the foot of the page.

To love is to lie down with the angels.

SOME TRUST IN CHARIOTS

There were those
who must have thought us mad
spending all that time and money
that we never had.

Well... some trust in chariots
and some in marble banks
some of us just love each other
and never ask for thanks.

There were those
who must have thought us daft
from the way we cried together
and the way we laughed.

Well... some trust in chariots
some in big machines
some of you save diamonds baby
some of us save dreams.

Some trust in chariots
with great big yellow wheels
well... I had a ride in a chariot
oh... how lonesome it feels.

I say... there are those...
who think of us fools
loving like a house on fire
and breakin’ all the rules.

Some trust in chariots
in chariots they ride
we ride the wings of love
together... side by side.

Some trust in chariots
with great big yellow wheels
I had a ride in a chariot
you can’t know... how lonesome it feels.

Some trust in chariots
in chariots they ride
Some trust in chariots
in chariots they ride.

We ride the wings of love
together side by side.
