A Thought for Today

The sounds that break the silence are the ones you never hear.

FROM the¨BOOKS

COME TO ME IN SILENCE

Come to me in silence
out of the noise of noon.
Be the eye inside of me.
Help me drink the river up
             and swallow it,
or let me take great mouthfuls
                    out of you,
stampeding you to bed
and then beyond,
                   beyond.

I do not expect
that we will meet again
in the same way as before,
you freckled by the summer morning
smiling like a china cup over blue-white
                gingham.
Me blue-jeaned and apple-cheeked
a frown away from being glad.
Accept the fact that we will grow
perhaps in different ways.

Come to me in solitude
pushing through the crowd
there are no others here
to pry or make demands.
If no one waits for you
                         but me,
I wait in that same solitude
that brings you here.

Come to me in silence
like the land-bound stone
pushed and shoved
     and finally sailed
against the gray indifferent shore.

Prophecies I have
and I am not indifferent
only gray,
full of dark midwinter questions
some that no one could know or guess.

-from “Come to Me in Silence", 1973

Rod's random thoughts Sharing credit with others never diminishes your contribution, it enhances it.

If roads surround a field, it too is captive.

I think about the distance to doubt and I find it’s too far to go.

THE HAWKS BACKYARD

I sleep all day. Erasing nothing.

Yesterday I crawled beneath the tractor
          and attacked the motor,
fixing it by noon.
Caroline rewarded me with milk and berries.

The half a case of black-red wine
that John dredged up
has pissed away the afternoon
and shot off half the night.

I call home. The cats are fine.
Bingo nearly caught a mouse.
Edward’s in the morning of a new love,
                  he sounds anxious.
He says you came by Saturday.

A long walk in the trees
through eyelets hollowed out of staghorn
until I reached a clearing
spared by fauna and the underbrush.

I start a conversation with the sun,
                                       am interrupted
when the same hawk I saw days ago
comes between us -
seeking, I suppose, another tree
or scouting field mice lower down.

Oh God, if I knew sunlight’s name
I’d seek him out on hill or road
and ride him till we fell as one
in shadows only night can make.
I am the solitary hawk.
I am the lonesome bird on high.
I am the suns disciple
                    dying in his ray -
and I am nothing when alone,
less than nothing without love.
Where is that safety solitude I practice?
