A Thought for Today

Imagination is my best refuge and it has stood me well.

FLIGHTS FROM6THE PAST
THURSDAY 25 July 2002

I keep getting requests to repeat this not so long ago Flight Plan, perhaps it has something to do with the reality TV craze.

Anyway, here it is.

THE TECH TV 4 SAGA

Tech TV more than fills the promise set up by MSNBC when Microsoft was a real presence on that network and not just an impassive investor the way it is now. Tech TV is friendly, fun, frivolous but full of good information and ideas and while I’m tempted to go on with this alliteration I’ll try to hold myself in check. They seem to have a little something for everyone who is into cyber anything so you don’t have to be a geek to enjoy it.

Nearly all of the shows on Tech TV are good enough to hold your interest in the foreground and best of all it is unobtrusive as background fodder while you are doing serious work on your desktop or laptop CPU. Let’s just say I’m a fan and leave it at that. And, guess what, their offices are in San Francisco and since I’m heading there today I thought I’d write them a fan letter and try to arrange a meeting.

They seem to like interviewing the occasional cyber-celebrity and while I’m no Morgan Fairchild or Dom Deloise (they interviewed him last night) I do occupy a certain position on the web and I figured this might be a chance to engage in some tech talk and spread the word about A Safe Place to Land.

One of Tech TV’s best shows is called “Screen Saver”. It is hosted by Leo & Patrick (a sort of everyman’s Abbott & Costello). Their shtick is good and the obvious friendship between the two of them is engaging and interesting. Around 7:AM yesterday morning I dropped them an e-mail, which over the next hour or so turned into a dialogue – admittedly a somewhat one sided conversation, but nevertheless a dialogue.

Guys:
I'm crazy about Tech TV & am coming to SF for my first appearance (7/29 Palace of Fine Arts) in my old hometown in a quarter of a century (time flies when you're climbing out of clinical depression.) As a Mac Freak with a 5-year-old website <rodmckuen.com> I'd love to talk to someone in your organization about "stuff." I'll be in town from late this Thursday (7/25) through noon 7/30. Hope if we can't meet we can at least touch base by phone.

Kindest Regards, a fan,
Rod McKuen

Thanks anyway, It was just a thought since I was going to be in town. Guess I felt if Dom Deloise had a shot last night I might at least be available for target practice. Sorry I drew a blank, but that happens now and again with Russian Roulette.

All the best, still a fan,

Rod McKuen

Guys:
You'll never know how much your duplicate automated response to my second note moved me. I love the instant attention you lavish on your fans,

Dear Guys:
If a bear spits in the woods & no one is there to see it, is it akin to the sound of one hand clapping?

Dear Guys:
Wow I can't answer your automated responses quickly enough, especially since I'm a one-finger typist. Bet you can't guess which finger I use?

Fellas, Patrick, Leo, whomever:
When I said I was a fan of your show I didn't expect such an avalanche of responses. This is getting a bit embarrassing. I only like your show, I don't love it.

Kindest Regards,

Rod McKuen

OK, OK:
While I find your responses stimulating and provocative . . . I've been up all night & at some point I have to brush my teeth, shower, take my vitamins, feed the cats and scratch up a little breakfast for myself, so if I don't get back to you as quickly as I have in the last hour I hope you'll understand.

Patrick:
Your house is on fire. Please leave Leo in the safe room and get home as quickly as you can.

Warmly,

Rod

OK, so it’s now 2:46 AM on Thursday morning and I’ve been working all day & still haven’t had any sleep, I’ve a plane to catch in a few hours but since Leo & Patrick are the subject of today’s Flight Plan I feel it’s only fair to warn them. What’s fair is fair, so here goes. I mean, nothing ventured . . .

Dear Patrick & Leo:
I enjoyed our conversation so much yesterday morning I thought I might share it with my readers today. You can check it out by pulling up the Flight Plan at www.rodmckuen.com. All my best to you both and I hope to connect with you in ‘The City’ this weekend. I know it’s “leather week” in San Francisco but maybe we can take the gloves off long enough to at least engage in an IM.

Kindest Regards,

Rod McKuen

I knew I could expect an immediate response from these guys.

Now why didn’t I think of that?

Rod's random thoughts Impatience can be a virtue, if you practice it on yourself.

Only when we pause to wonder do we go beyond the limits of our little lives.

The gladiator doesn't always need a battle, only a clean change of underwear.

SINGLE

Ah the sense of all togetherness
                   that single brings.
It is not unlike the rat-a-tat
of rain artillery
that makes a puddle
                            then a lake.
Done right it dignifies a life.

Single in all things. Outsider.
Masked bandit on the run.
"There goes the territory,"
                          couples shout.
I think it is a cry of envy
from those who traded freedom
for what they hoped was sensibility.

Some trade up again -
not the same.
Once inside you cannot be an outlaw.
First grade is not taught
without a certain innocence.
Plateau number one
is the only starting point
Single. One word.
And that is all it is, one word.
Solo and not magnified.
