A Thought for Today

The guarantee for finding sanity is finding love again.

This One Does It For Me!

Dear Ken;

I enjoyed reading your column regarding your 'McKuen Memory' of the 'Jack Frost' lyrics from his song, "Blessings In Shades Of Green." It helped to trigger a fond memory I have had often since 1968 or 1969. Oh boy, now I'm showing my age. Oh well, for 'McKuen Memories' aging is worth it.

One early evening my father returned home from work after making a quick stop at the record store. He had purchased an album featuring Rod's song, "Jean." My mother's middle name was Jean.

He called her into the living room where the record player was, turned the volume up, and as 'Jean' played, he took my mother by the hand, danced with her and sang along with Rod McKuen.

Mom passed away very young and we miss her still very much, but with a special memory like this it helps to comfort. I wonder, Ken, how many people have been and will be comforted by the words and music of our dearly beloved Rod McKuen? Perhaps you can share the lyrics to the beautiful song, "Jean." The original and/or the newest version would be wonderful. Thank you, Ken.

Love,

Sharon McElroy

I posted these lyrics a few months back, Sharon, but you asked so nicely, how could I refuse? According to a poll conducted many years ago this is the most requested of all Rod's songs and it's one we probably get the most letters about.

It never ceases to amaze me how a particular song can bring back memories so vividly, almost to the point of conjuring up the smell and/or taste of the particular occasion. In your case your Mom and Dad dancing to this tune is something that will stay with you for a long, long time, I'll bet.

How many people have been comforted by McKuen words and music? If I had a dollar ...!

Nice to hear from you again, Sharon and don't be such a stranger.

I'll be back next Wednesday with more of your stories. If you have one you'd like to contribute, drop me a line at kenb@mckuen.com and I'll do the rest.

JEAN

Jean, Jean, the roses are red
and all the leaves have gone green
and the clouds are so low
you can touch them and so
come out to the meadow, Jean.

Jean, Jean, you’re young and alive
come out of your half-dreamed dream
and run, if you will
to the top of the hill
open your eyes, bonnie Jean.

Till the sheep in the valley come home I’ll wait
till the stars fall around me and find me alone
when the sun comes a-singin’
I’ll still be waitin’.

Jean, Jean, the roses are red
all the leaves have gone green
and the clouds are so low
you can touch them and so
come into my arms, bonnie Jean.

All the hills are ablaze
with the morn’s yellow haze
come into my arms, bonnie Jean... Jean.
