The 1972 Christmas Card
This year
Let us buy each other nothing.
Give me your strongest smile
and in return
I’ll let you have my hand.
These are presents quite enough
for two who love each other
and each other’s God.
-from “The 1972 Rod McKuen Calendar & Date
book,” 1971
Winter Can Be Long
With so little love or kindness
shouted out or carried to us
winter can be long.
I know you have some troubles
but they belong to me now, too,
we can skate the ice together.
-from “The 1974 Rod McKuen
Calendar & Date Book,” 1973
December Dawn
December’s dawn
comes soon enough to every life
and it will finally stop by ours.
I know with you beside me
I will embrace the winter
the same as I have welcomed
spring after spring after spring.
The last December?
Just another time together
for two to gather and bind up
a few more added days
in a life already full enough
and spilling over.
