A Thought for Today
The essence of friendship is trust.

FROM the¨BOOKS
BAJA
Scarlet is the space
that flushes out
the folded cloud lines
in the western sky
between the silent surface
of the sea.
In only moments
the space will narrow,
grow quite red,
then quiet pink-and go.
And still the old man
does not come
to lead the cattle home.
Whatever mystery has made him late,
the animals are restless now.
Should I start down the road,
they'd follow -
Gladly I would lead them home
but by which road?
That seems to be the center,
the heart and edge
of every quandary.
Which road? When to take it?
How to know for sure.
I have found -
when doubting most -
that up ahead is always up ahead
and however many turns
the right or left road makes
it always leads to right or left.
I do not imagine
what I've said or say
will offer much encouragement
to the would-be traveler
but the information, once distilled,
should say
the only way to get there is to go.
- From "The Beautiful
Strangers", 1981

Friendship is a seed once sown thats better in the
practice.
In friendship,
silence is more important than words.

Friends are angels in old clothes.

GOOD EVENING FRIEND |
|
How good it feels
to concentrate on others.
Foreigners or farmers
women in the street and those
within my head.
Lumberjacks and loudmouths.
Mothers chasing children and
the child working at eluding parents,
making mischief of the mischief
being made on them.
Lovers courting, squaring off within
the dance, then dancing circles
round each other,
pairing off, then repairing to their corners,
exchanging partners or tripping through
the day not as dancers as audience to those
who love and live their life loves in an instant.
What a time this end of summertime
to just observe, to call the world companion
and let imaginary friendships tumble, spin
as the heart goes spinning. too.
Friendships neednt be that real in body
If they are comrades in our minds. A friend
can be a fig tree and never know it, a place
within a certain wood. A special tree
inside that selfsame forest.
How many Augusts I have taken to my heart
would more than fill a calendar made of Augusts.
How many people walking in as many
different leas will go unmarked,
not jotted down.
There are compatriots Ive made and lost
and made again without their knowledge.
Good evening, friend. Ah, ha, you didnt
catch me or discern that bond between us
or did you?
